Today marks the public launch of Video.medfield.tv, a new website moderated by public access station Medfield.TV that promises to be the go-to place for online videos related to Medfield. The website is collecting videos from video hosting services like YouTube and displaying them alongside those created to air on the public access station. Anyone can submit videos from or about Medfield, and the site is moderated by Jason Daniels, Executive Director at Medfield.TV, and the rest of the Medfield.TV team.
Medfield.TV runs three local cable channels - one for public access, one for education, and one for government. The station has long had some of their videos archived on their website, but the new site allows them to easily display these videos as well as community materials posted elsewhere. "Medfield has a very web savvy population and this site empowers them and makes real bridge from cable access TV to the next generation of local community media", says Daniels. The new video site allows users to submit videos they find around the web that are relevant to the community for display and discussion. "We hope that people who are posting their videos online will see them posted on the site and say, 'this public access thing sounds cool - maybe I should get involved',” Daniels explained. “This software lets us reach out to a natural constituency we may have been missing.”
Video.medfield.tv is powered by Miro Community, a software created by the nonprofit Participatory Culture Foundation. Co-Founder and Executive Director Nicholas Reville said of today's launch, "Miro Community gives cities and towns a way to see what's happening in their own community, right down the street." While more and more people are posting videos about the news and culture in their communities to sites like YouTube, this content has previously been very difficult to find if you go searching for local video results. "Medfield.TV knows the community and they are posting the most interesting and relevant videos each day," Reville said. "It's a totally new way to see Medfield."
Daniels is especially enthusiastic about the possibilities for engaging youth through the site. He points to a music video created by a local teen using legos and documentaries of local band performances. "These are videos that are great creative and educational additions to our community, but we wouldn't have been able to broadcast them on the station. Now we have a way to highlight and distribute this kind of content, and we'll share these works on a cable TV show, too."
The Miro Community project is funded in part by a grant from the Knight Foundation, which supports “innovative ideas that develop platforms, tools and services to inform and transform community news, conversations and information distribution and visualization.” Reville says the Participatory Culture Foundation anticipates launching at least ten more local sites within the year.
